Summer is here! As the days grow hotter and longer, more families will be flocking to the pool to keep cool and relax. While swimming pools are a common fixture in homes in the Seattle area, many individuals forget how dangerous they can be. It is vital to be cognizant of the risks and hazards associated with pools so that you can best prepare to avoid them.

Accidental Drowning

One of the most common causes of injury or death associated with swimming pools in the Seattle area is accidental drowning, and sadly, many of the victims are young children.

In order to reduce the risk of accidental drowning, it is vital to keep unattended children away from pools. This can be done by placing a gate or screen around the pool, keeping all screen and sliding glass doors locked with child safety devices installed, and keeping backyard gates shut and locked to keep neighborhood children away. In addition, we recommend teaching children both how to swim and safe pool etiquette.

Impact Injuries

When an individual hits the water at a certain angle and with certain force after diving off a diving board, they will plummet to the bottom of the pool. When a pool is not deep enough or the depth is not readily apparent to swimmers, a swimmer is at a high risk of hitting their head on the bottom of the pool, resulting in traumatic brain injuries, serious spinal cord injuries, and even death through accidental drowning.

Only install a diving board if your pool is at least 11 feet deep in the area you wish to have the diving board. In addition, mark the depth of the pool so that swimmers are aware. If your pool is commonly used by guests or the public, place signs with diving board rules, warnings, and instructions around the pool.

Slip and Falls

Another common type of pool accident is the slip and fall. As people walk around in wet bathing suits and splash around, the pool deck becomes wet, and puddles may not be readily apparent to guests. If the pool owner is aware of or should have been aware of the slippery conditions, he may be found to be negligent.

Signs should be placed around the pool to warn visitors to walk slowly, wear proper shoes, and keep an eye out for puddles. In addition, the pool owner should regularly inspect the pool for any dangerous conditions. If the pool owner discovers something, he should take steps to warn others by, for example, blocking off the area, as well as to fix the issue.
