149 Car Crashes Reported in Spokane after Snowfall

By Hardwick & Pendergast, P.S. on January 15, 2013

Over a snowy two-day period, 149 vehicles crashed in Spokane County. According to a NWPR news report, there were 116 wrecks on January 7 in Spokane County when half a foot of snow fell, and another 33 accidents by mid afternoon on January 8. Officials say that many of these dangerous roadway crashes involved drivers who were traveling too fast for the roadway conditions. The posted speed limits are for optimal roadway conditions and not for roads that are covered in snow, water, or ice. In the article, a Spokane police officer recommended driving no faster than 30 mph on roads where the limit is 50 mph.

Winter driving can be treacherous. When it is snowing, it may be advisable to just stay home. If you do have to drive, there are a number of important safety tips to consider. First and foremost, it is important to make sure that your vehicle has been properly maintained. Having inflated tires that have proper tire tread depth is key to getting good traction. Having quality brakes will also prove vital when dealing with wet and icy conditions.

It is also important to make sure that snow and ice are completely removed from your windshield and other windows before leaving your driveway. This way you will clearly see around you. It is also advisable to have a full tank of gas and plenty of windshield washer fluid. When driving, remember to slow down and to leave more time to slow down than you would under normal conditions.
