Four Ways to Beat the Seattle Heat
The lazy days of summer have descended on Seattle, and while the Emerald City is fortunate enough to escape the scorching temperatures that hit much of the rest of the country, it doesn’t mean that we don’t experience the occasional heat wave. Here are some of the classic ways to stay cool during the hottest days of the year in Seattle.
If there’s anything synonymous with summertime, it’s swimming pools, splash parks, beaches, and even the old fashioned slip n’ slide. Seattle has plenty of options when it comes to getting wet and staying cool during the hotter months. Spend an afternoon at one of the many wading pools and splash pads if you have little ones, or rent a kayak at the Northwest Outdoor Center and explore Puget Sound.
Keeping It Frosty
With so many ice cream and frozen yogurt joints in the city, it may have slipped your mind that one of the easiest (and most delicious) ways to cool off is to indulge in an ice cream cone or decadently topped frozen yogurt. If you’re full of wanderlust but can’t afford a flight to Europe, there’s always Seattle’s own D’ambrosio Gelato or Fainting Goat Gelato.
Whether dining at a world-class restaurant or throwing a backyard barbecue, chances are you’ll be reaching for multiple icy beverages throughout the summer. It is important to stay hydrated during the summer, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with just water. Stop by your local farmers’ market to pick up ingredients for lemonade or sangrias, explore the many varieties of Seattle-based craft brews, or duck into your favorite watering hole for an afternoon.
Find Some Tree Shade
Ever notice that sitting in the shade of a tree can be considerably cooler than sitting under an awning or umbrella? That’s because trees and many other plants absorb and evaporate moisture during the day, creating a cooling affect for those under their branches. Even on the hottest days, you’re sure to find some shade and a nice breeze in one of Seattle’s many parks, wooded areas, and campgrounds.
