Pedestrian Killed in Renton Car Accident

By Hardwick & Pendergast, P.S. on January 5, 2015

A man was killed in a King County car accident when a car struck him in the roadway. According to a news report in The Seattle Times, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred at Southwest Sunset Boulevard and Rainier Avenue South in Renton. Officials say the man was crossing the road when a vehicle turned and struck him. He succumbed to his injuries at Harborview Medical Center. The driver remained at the scene. It is unclear if the motorist will face charges.

Washington State compares favorably with other states when it comes to pedestrian safety, but fatal traffic accidents are common on the busy streets of Seattle and its suburbs. Because pedestrians have nothing to protect them, they often suffer serious injuries such as brain damage, multiple bone fractures, spinal cord injuries and fatal injuries.

Drivers in Washington must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians legally crossing the street, but many fail to look before turning. To reduce your chances of being in a crash, it is advisable to:

  • Use the sidewalks whenever possible;
  • Walk on the left shoulder of the road facing traffic when there are no sidewalks available;
  • Cross only in marked crosswalks or intersections;
  • Look left, right and left again before stepping into traffic;
  • Make eye contact with drivers before entering the roadway;
  • Choose roadways with adequate lighting;

And wear bright colored clothing. Even pedestrians who exercise caution can suffer a serious or even fatal injury when drivers behave negligently. If a careless driver has hurt you, you can pursue financial compensation for your injuries by filing a personal injury claim. If you have lost a loved one in a crash, it may be in your best interest to file a wrongful death claim.

The family of someone killed in a Seattle car accident can pursue financial compensation for a number of losses such as medical bills, lost future wages, loss of inheritance, loss of companionship, pain, suffering and other related damages. In order to receive fair compensation for these types of damages, it is crucial for families to seek legal guidance and support from a skilled Seattle car accident attorney, who will ensure that their rights are protected every step of the way.
