bicyclist legal rights
A 38-year-old man was killed and a 51-year-old man was injured in a Washington car accident involving a hit-and-run driver. According to a news report in The Seattle Times, the fatal bicycle accident occurred along Kendall Road in Bellingham. Officials say the two cyclists were riding when a 1994 Ford Escort struck them and drove away. The 38-year-old died at the scene and the other cyclist was hospitalized. The 57-year-old driver of the vehicle was later arrested and booked into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of hit-and-run.
It is illegal to leave the scene of an accident when someone has been injured or killed. According to Washington Statute 46.52.020, “A driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting in the injury to or death of any person or involving striking the body of a deceased person shall immediately stop such vehicle at the scene of such accident or as close thereto as possible but shall then forthwith return to, and in every event remain at, the scene of such accident.” Read the rest »
