Tips for Driving in Wet Weather

By Hardwick & Pendergast, P.S. on June 23, 2017

Living in the Seattle area, you can expect an average of 152 rainy days in a year. This steady flow of precipitation keeps the foliage around the Emerald City lush and green while keeping the air clean and fresh. Unfortunately, it also makes driving more hazardous. Nationwide, wet pavement contributes to 1.2 million traffic accidents each year. But, driving in wet conditions won’t be as dangerous if you follow a few simple tips:

  • Tires: Make sure your tires are properly inflated and have adequate tread. To see if you have enough tread, insert a quarter into the tread with George Washington’s head facing downward. If you can see any space above old George’s head, it’s time to invest in some new tires.
  • Windshield Wipers: If your windshield wipers leave streaks, bounce across the glass, or make a screeching sound, they need to be replaced.
  • Headlights: Turn on your headlights the moment it begins to rain, even in the daytime. Rain means clouds, and clouds reduce the distance you can see.
  • Slow Down: Water on pavement drastically increases the time it will take your vehicle to stop. Reduce your speed by 10 to 15 miles per hour when it’s raining and leave extra room between you and other vehicles on the road.
  • Avoid Slamming on the Brakes: Though you may be tempted to slam on the brakes in a situation, avoid doing so. Braking too hard will cause you to skid and lose control of your vehicle.

These tips can help you avoid an accident in rainy weather, but that’s not always enough to keep you safe. Other drivers may not drive with the caution you use when driving on wet pavement. If another driver causes an accident that injures you or damages your property, he or she can be held accountable in a civil suit.
