As any Washington resident who has been in a car accident knows, car accidents can occur at any time on any day. Statistically, however, certain days and months are more likely to see car accidents than others, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
A recent NHTSA study of deadly car accidents found that the rate of accidents follows a trend that keeps pace with the seasons. Summer sees more car accidents than winter, due to the larger number of vehicles on the road as families head out to enjoy the nice weather or to go on vacation.
The change in car accident rates fluctuates with the seasons; however, it pales in comparison to the spike in the number of car accidents on major holidays. From 1975 to 2002, the NHTSA found that fatal auto accidents were most likely to occur on July 3, July 4, December 23, and December 24. Other holidays like New Year’s and Labor Day also saw a higher rate of deadly crashes for occupants of motor vehicles.
For pedestrians, the riskiest days to be out include December 23, January 1, and October 31. These are the days in which pedestrians are most likely to be killed in an auto accident. Not surprisingly, all three correspond with major holidays – especially October 31, Halloween, when walking door-to-door is a childhood tradition.
