Why Do More Truck Crashes Occur in Seattle over the Holidays?

On Behalf of | Dec 15, 2016 | Truck Accident

By Pendergast Law on December 15, 2016

The holidays are a great time to see family, spend time with friends, and reflect on years past, as well as the new one about to begin. Unfortunately, the holidays also mean a lot of travel for people and companies, especially trucking companies. And while of course, truck accidents can happen at any time of the year, there is an increased risk over the holidays, and during the entire winter season. There are a number of reasons for this, just a few of which are listed below…

  • More trucks are one the road. Trucking companies can get very busy during the holidays. They have shipments to take to stores, packages to deliver to individuals, and a number of other customers that are waiting on their deliveries. Because of this, there are more trucks on the road during the holiday season, and that increases the likelihood of truck accidents occurring.
  • Overweight loads. There are very strict regulations in place for how much weight a single load can bear, and guidelines that have to be followed in cases of overweight loads. As trucking companies have more loads to be delivered to more people however, they may sometimes take shortcuts with these guidelines, and not follow them properly. When that happens, it can create a dangerous situation for the truckers and the other drivers on the road.
  • Increased driver error. While it’s the holiday season for drivers on the road, it’s also the holiday season for truck drivers. They also want to get home to see their families, beat the weather, and ultimately get off the road. This rushing can sometimes cause truck accidents due to driver error, such as when they’re speeding or driving recklessly.
  • Road conditions. Road conditions can cause a problem for anyone on the road, but for truck drivers, especially new truck drivers, they can be especially hazardous. Larger trucks can be harder to control, and their trailer can swerve into other lanes or make improper turns.

While we’d all like to think that the holidays are nothing but a time of excitement and good cheer, sometimes things go wrong. The chance of things going wrong on the road actually increases during the holidays, especially for trucks that are on the road. When that happens, we at Hardwick & Pendergast, P.S. are here for you.
